Traffic cameras showed long tailbacks forming on the motorway

Part of the M6 has been closed after a number of people were found in the back of a lorry stopped by police.

“A number of people exited the back of a vehicle” near Keele services, Staffordshire Police said.

A man has been arrested and officers are “assessing the welfare” of those in the lorry and “will be liaising with colleagues in immigration enforcement.”

The northbound carriageway, between junctions 15 and 16, remains closed, the force said.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and West Midlands Ambulance Service are also at the scene, police added.

Motorists have faced huge tailbacks on the road, with some reporting long delays.

Hundreds of Burton Albion supporters face missing the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City – one of the biggest games in the club’s history.
